Social Action
The Social Action Committee is a focal point of our congregation. Through our work in the community, we put our Seven Principles into action. We support a number of local non-profit charitable organizations through monetary contributions as well as our donations of time, food, and other resources. These activities include:
|
| The Armory is a cold weather shelter in Fullerton where services are provided during the months of December to March. UUCF assists on Wednesday evenings from 5 pm in serving dinner and distributing clothing to the residents of this emergency shelter. |
| | Circulo de Amigas provides educational support for girls in Jinotega, Nicaragua. Several members of UUCF sponsor girls through this program in paying for tuition and assistance for the girls’ families. This wonderful organization was founded by Pat McCully, a UU who lives in OC. |
| | Fair Trade Coffee Project Sales of fair trade coffee, chocolate, tea, and other green products ensures that workers get their fair share and that we act responsibly towards our fellow human beings and our environment. Products sold in the social hall after church. |
| | Fullerton Interfaith Emergency Services: Provides food, transitional living, and support services to the hungry, homeless and less advantaged of northern Orange County. Weekly food donations from UUCF go to the FIES Food Distribution Center. FIES also supports an interfaith shelter network and assistance to families at the New Vista Center, among other projects. |
| | Fullerton Interfaith Ministerial Association supports FIES as well as the local Habitat for Humanity and the Crop Walk. Each of these groups work with other faith communities in the local area. In April we walk together with other faith communities to stamp out hunger locally and globally. Habitat for Humanity OC works with other faith communities to build homes for low income families in Fullerton and other local areas. |
| | UULMCA is a social justice ministry that serves to empower the moral voice of UU values as guided by our seven principles. Recent areas of focus have included marriage equality, health care reform, and climate change. |
| | UUSC supports the "Guest at your table" project beginning in November. Among the projects supported is advocacy for providing potable water to those in developing countries. |
| | Up2UU helps local shelter residents escape dependency by increasing their access to work. Projects include assistance with resume writing, teaching computer skills, coaching in interview techniques, tutoring to pass the GED, teaching ESL, coaching in daily life skills, assessing aptitude for career planning, and coaching literacy. |
| Previous projects of the Social Action Committee have included Bridges into Africa, which has helped to support UU churches in Kenya and Burundi, and the Foster Child Scholarship which has provided financial aid to a former foster child attending Fullerton Community College. In 2010 we will be supporting the AIDS Walk of O.C. and continuing our efforts with local, national, and international organizations. |

I am only one
But still I am one.
I cannot do everything,
But still I can do something.
And because I cannot do
everything
I will not refuse to do the
something that I can do.
