Social Action Vision, Mission, Goals

Unitarians and Universalists have long worked for social justice in the United States and abroad, advocating for the free practice of religion, helping to abolish slavery, marching for civil rights, supporting a woman’s right to reproductive health, promoting LGBTQIA+ rights, and fighting for racial, environmental and economic justice.

With our work far from over, we sustain a robust movement of social action at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Fullerton.

There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer, whether you have ten minutes or a whole day. You can be a part of shining a light of hope and love.

At UUCF, we envision an empowered congregation community that acts together on the moral and ethical values expressed in the Unitarian Universalist Eight Principles and Six Shared Values, to alleviate suffering; promote peace, diversity and justice; and bring people together through greater understanding, in our congregation, community, and world.

The Social Justice Team acts to make a difference in our congregation, the larger community, and the world. Our efforts are guided by our Unitarian Universalist shared values as we seek to work for the vulnerable in our community in areas such as housing/homelessness, immigration/racial justice and environmental justice. Towards this end, we collaborate with other community groups whose goals intersect with ours.

We uphold and center our work around the seven UU shared Values of love, generosity, interdependence, pluralism, equity, justice, and transformation. In addition, our eight Principles affirm the inherent dignity and worth of all beings, justice and compassion, spiritual growth, truth and meaning, right of conscience in democracy, global peace and liberty, interdependent web of existence, and journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.

The Social Action Committee exists to empower the congregation to choose issues for study and action, integrating social justice issues into the overall life of the congregation by coordinating acts of witness; creating forums for social justice, study and action; and embracing service, education and advocacy. The Committee accomplishes its work by researching needs, creating study groups, forming task forces, organizing in the community, building alliances and cooperatives, providing education on social justice issues, offering service projects for our community's basic needs, promoting participation in democracy, and more.
