About the event

What were spiritual practices like for the indigenous peoples of California and Mexico before there was even a "California" or a "Mexico"? How did they change during colonialization from Spain, secularism from Mexico, and assimilation by the United States? What has survived this cultural genocide? How did it survive? What does all of this mean for the Acjachemen people today?

Come with what you know and what you are curious about finding out. Explore how the Acjachemen's centuries-old practices evolved in these concerted attempts to erase their culture. Find out who Chinigchinich is. Discuss the structure of oppression, what the Acjachemen are doing now to resist and reclaim power, and what we can do as allies.

UUCF acknowledges that this land is situated in the original ancestral homelands of the Acjachemen, Kizh, and Tongva peoples. May we have the humility and courage to help restore what has been broken, and the wisdom to live into a new solidarity with Indigenous communities and the earth.
